What happens when both sides claim self-defense about battery?

I was attacked by a male over the weekend. I was holding my son when he grabbed my wrist then the back of my neck. Someone stepped in the middle of this and took my son away from the violence. I did strike the male in the face but not hard enough to stop him. ( I did tell the police this) My understanding is that he is claiming self defense and I am. The Police took pictures of the bleeding and bruising on my neck and face. I have never been involved with the police so Im scared they will arrest us both since we are saying one another started it. I would NEVER put my son in that situation, I would never start fight with a male while holding my son and whil my husband is in Iraq not able to protect me. I called the prosecutors office and they havent received the police report yet. Im also very worried b/c they asked alot of questions about my son. Maybe they think Im going to run away or something? any info would help, thanks
